Curse of Strahd Resources: Reloaded & DM Guides

Community supplements, maps, and tools for running Curse of Strahd as something other than the book it shipped as.

Curse of Strahd Reloaded & Fan Supplements

Curse of Strahd as written has a known shape: a strong opening, a strong endgame at Castle Ravenloft, and a middle that asks you to run Barovia as a hexcrawl with little structural support for why factions act between sessions. The supplements below are the community's answers — Reloaded restructures the whole campaign as DM-runnable arcs; the Fleshing Out series fills specific chapter-by-chapter gaps; the rest sit somewhere in between. Pick by what your prep needs, not by what's most-recommended.

Curse of Strahd Maps & Battle Maps

The book ships with maps for the major dungeons and almost nothing for the towns or random-encounter locations the party will spend most of the campaign in. The packs below cover the gap. If you run on a VTT, DungeonsLAB or The MAD Cartographer's Foundry module saves the most setup time; if you run in person, Tessa's 113-map set covers the locations Mike Schley's official prints don't.

Death House & Tarokka Resources

Death House and the Tarokka reading both ship with structural problems serious enough that the community has built whole replacement supplements for each. Death House as-written is a linear haunted-house dungeon that ends in an unwinnable fight expecting a TPK escape; the Tarokka deals can produce outcomes that flatly don't work as a campaign (the Sunsword in the hands of an NPC the party will never meet, allies who hate them on sight). The resources below either rewrite Death House around story instead of the dungeon, or replace the Tarokka draw with a version that doesn't break.

How to Run Strahd as a Tactical Villain

The published module tells you Strahd is a 700-year-old vampire lord with the resources of a country and a personal stake in the party's destruction. The encounters as-written do not behave that way. Strahd shows up in places he has no tactical reason to go, fights when he should retreat, and retreats when he could finish. The result is a BBEG who seems threatening on paper and reads as incompetent at the table.

Best Classes for Curse of Strahd

CoS punishes specific class assumptions: Strahd's signature attacks deal psychic damage (which Barbarian Rage doesn't resist), the campaign runs lean on long rests and on magic items below late-tier, and the BBEG opens fights with charm. The picks below are the classes whose features push back on those specific pressures, plus two classes that don't.

If your CoS group is heading for a continuation rather than wrapping at level 10, Tomb of Annihilation is the obvious next book — same level band, same survival-pressure logic, none of the Barovia-specific class assumptions carry over. Worth flagging here so DMs aren't shopping for it mid-finale.

Clerics — Best Overall

Clerics excel in Curse of Strahd due to radiant damage, healing, and Turn Undead features that counter vampires and undead throughout the campaign.

  • Life Domain: Essential healing in a campaign with limited rest opportunities.
  • Light Domain: Radiant damage that vampires can't resist.
  • Twilight Domain (Tasha's): Darkvision aura + temp HP for the party.

Paladins — High Burst Damage

Paladins combine Divine Smite with aura buffs that protect the party from fear effects — critical in a campaign where the villain uses Charm and fear tactics.

  • Oath of Devotion: Sacred Weapon + immunity to charm for the paladin.
  • Oath of Vengeance: Single-target burst against Strahd.

Wizards — Information & Control

Wizards provide utility and control in a campaign where knowledge is scarce. Divination Wizards can manipulate the Tarokka reading outcomes.

  • Divination: Portent dice for critical Tarokka or save manipulation.
  • Abjuration: Arcane Ward protects against Strahd's necrotic damage.

Rangers — Tracking & Survival

Rangers with Favored Enemy (undead) gain combat bonuses and tracking utility throughout Barovia.

  • Gloom Stalker (Xanathar's): Invisible to darkvision creatures in darkness.
  • Fey Wanderer (Tasha's): Wisdom-based face character for social encounters.

Classes That Face Challenges

No class is unplayable, but some struggle more than others:

  • Barbarians: Rage damage resistance doesn't apply to psychic damage (which Strahd uses). Reckless Attack is risky against enemies with high crit potential.
  • Monks: Limited magic item support in a gothic horror campaign where magic weapons matter. Ki points don't scale well for the extended adventuring days Barovia demands.

Get Class Options Books

Expand your subclass options for Curse of Strahd with official sourcebooks. Xanathar's Guide to Everything and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything add powerful gothic-horror thematic subclasses like Twilight Domain Cleric and Gloom Stalker Ranger.
